Since its introduction in the 1960s, after decades of development, the container straddle carrier has become a key piece of equipment for container terminals and yards, as has the tyre-type container gantry crane.

It spans on the container with portal frame, lifts the container by the hydraulic lifting system equipped with container spreader, carries out the handling, and can stack the container two or three layers high. English name straddle carrier, generally used for short midway transport containers, flexible, fast, the system is composed of hydraulic drive, in the European terminal is widely used. Container straddle carrier can be divided into three types according to its body structure type:
